Playas del Coco Travel Guide

The town and its people

Playas del Coco the paradisiacal place where grandparents came on their vacations and many of them ended up falling in love in their youth. APlayas del Coco, Guanacaste, Costa Rica fisherman’s village became the favorite place to vacation for many local and foreign tourists over the years. Playas del Coco has located 35 km from the city of Liberia and only 25 minutes from the Guanacaste airport, which is the main entrance for international tourists to the Guanacaste province.

El Coco is like a small valley, with approx 5000 residents, it is surrounded by hills that turn brown during the dry season and radically change to an intense green during the rainy season. Very near you can visit other beaches such as Ocotal, Hermosa, or Panama. There is a principal boulevard where most of the businesses are located, and end up at the park called Amor de Temporada. On the beachfront, you will find some bars/restaurants to enjoy a drink or some local food.

El Coco is the largest coastal town in Guanacaste and probably the last one where you can find a mix of nationalities that have made Playas del Coco their home. That makes this area a town rich in diversity of cultures, Italians, Canadians, U.S ex-pats, Argentinians, Spain, French, and Germans are just some of the citizenships that you can meet around.

The Beach

Playas del Coco, Guanacaste, Costa RicaOf course, the beach is the highlighted part of Playas del Coco; it is a 3 km long beach, with gray sand, with intermediate waves, during the low tide you can enjoy very calm waters, mostly a natural pool. The best area for swimming is on the right side of the beach, the water is much cleaner and more transparent, and it is perfect to enjoy the beach.

There is a trail from the park to almost the end of the beach, it is a very nice hike, and you could find some nice spots to relax. Also, during the rainy season, you could find a waterfall that comes down from the mountain and flows into the sea. It is a quiet, family beach during the weekends, and in times of festivities, you may find the place crowded with local tourists.

Do not swim near the river mouths as rip currents could be present.

At the communities of Barva and Santo Domingo, you can be appreciated a great number of colonial houses. The city of Heredia, best known as ‘City of the Flowers’, was founded in 1706, by the initiative of 150 families living there. All these families came from the main city called Cartago, our other province. These lands were inhabited by Huetares indigenous before the colony. As well in 1751 the first high school in the area was founded, called Liceo de Heredia.

The vegetation surrounding this sleeping giant is astonishing; an ideal place for bird watching, especially for those who dream with the magnificent Quetzal.

On the other hand, Braulio Carrillo National Park represents the greatest natural richness near the Central Valley. A tropical rainforest home to hundreds of plant and animal species to discover. The dense vegetation of the park safeguards many water eyes, waterfalls, and rivers, used as tap water. If you are driving to the Caribbean side, you will have to drive through it as the road crosses along the park. You can perform a hike through the national park trails along the rainforest and where you will observe many of the local flora and fauna.

Heredia, Costa RicaSarapiqui River is another of the attractions of the province. This imposing river travels through dense vegetation, where birds and wildlife are abundant. The river has an ideal current for those who enjoy the rapids, with a moderate degree of difficulty. Along the river, you can perform activities as a river float tour in search of crocodiles, monkeys, birds, and more. Cartago Province, Costa Rica

Cartago was founded in 1563 by the conqueror Juan Vasquez de Coronado, it was the first formal town in Costa Rica. Located 22 km out of San Jose, Cartago was the capital of Costa Rica between the years 1574 to 1824 when this title was transferred to the city of San Jose. It is a relatively small province, with barely 3.124 km/2 and almost 35 000 inhabitants. It is perhaps Costa Rica’s most important area in matters of colonial art.

The best example is the temple of Orosi, dating back to 1743, a historical jewel that was witness to the birth of a nation. Also at the Orosi Valley is possible to found the ruins of one of the oldest of colonial times churches, the Ujarras Church built between the years 1575 and 1580.

As well on the way you can observe the Cachi Danm used for hydroelectric power generation. Cartago has a humid, tropical climate. In Cartago, we find two mountain ranges: the Central is where we find the Irazú Volcano which is easy to visit and offers amazing views. As well you can find the Turrialba volcano, active massive showing eruptions constantly. The Talamanca mountain range is the other great mountain formation of the province. The imposing Cerro Chirripo, the highest point in Costa Rica, is located here, at 3.600 meters above sea level. Cartago is a land of traditions and religiosity.

Cartago, Costa RicaIn the north, we find the national monument of Guayabo, located on the outskirts of the town of Turrialba. Here visitors may admire the enigmatic constructions, dating back to Precolombian times. It’s one of the largest archeological areas discovered in the country. Mounds, bridges, plazas, and highways, as well as an aqueduct that is still working, are some of the remains of ancient cultures.

Pilgrimage to Our Lady of the Angels Basilica at the center of the city of Cartago is the most important religious activity of Costa Rica. Celebrated each August 2nd, here attend millions of people from all around the country. Nevertheless, the main attraction of Cartago could be the Irazú volcano. This is a splendid giant which still remains active, whose five craters gather thousands of tourists yearly.

Irazu Volcano is the highest in the country with 3.432 meters over sea level. Several rivers nurturing the basins of others, like Chirripo, Reventazon, Sarapiqui, and Grande de Tarcoles are born here. As well this province offers a soil rich in nutrients of which the agricultures take advantage of and are used for several crops like potatoes, carrots, onion, and many more. Another great place to visit is La Marta, this refuge offers you amazing rivers, flora, and fauna to discover, this place is located in Turrialba. Also, it is a great place for bird and wildlife observation.

If you are looking for some adrenaline and adventure to go, in Cartago you can find some of the best rapids in the country. Take the Reventazon or Pacuare White Water Rafting trips and live one of the most exciting adventures you can have in life. Or take a hike by some of the national parks you can find here. Visit the Tapanti National Park, part of the International Park La Amistad, shared between Costa Rica and Panama.

Certainly visiting Cartago can be a great experience where you will learn about everything. Here you can discover about or aborigines, the way of life and more, as well discover volcanoes and colonial churches. Visit extraordinary national parks full of nature, try typical food and make new friends.

San Jose, Costa Rica

San Jose is a bustling city, busy and with traffic, like any other around the globe. If your flight arrives at Juan Santamaria Airport, San Jose becomes the first entrance to Costa Rica. From here you can start your trip and stay one or two in the city and learn a little more. San Jose, the country’s capital and most highly populated province. Located in the Central Valley, it extends to the northeast, crossing the impressive volcanoes of the Central Mountain Range. Which includes national parks, forest reserves, and fertile lands, with an abundance of coffee plantations

Founded in the first half of the eighteenth century, San Jose is nowadays a city where visitors of the entire world converge; a metropolis full of interesting places, faces, and colors reflecting the history of a population. Despite the fact that there are still beautiful colonial buildings, not many are still standing today since they gave way to new buildings. However, there are places like the National Theater, Inaugurated in 1897,  that is a must if you have the possibility to stay here.

San JoseAt night in San Jose, you can find a wide variety of gastronomic offers, from gourmet places to sodas with typical dishes. You will find cuisine from all corners of the world in this small city. If you stay in San Jose for a couple of days discover the National Museum. Gold and Jade Museums. There you will learn about our history, cultural origins and much more.

From San Jose, you can also take one of the one-day tours. If you want some adrenaline take any of the white water rafting trips available and challenge yourselves with amazing rapids class III, IV & V. From San Jose you can also perform the Tortuga Island cruise. This is an amazing trip that takes you to Puntarenas where you embark. The trip takes you along the Nicoya Gulf until arrive at this amazing jewel of nature in the middle of the ocean.

If you want to discover the tropical forest from a different point of view, you should take the ziplines and aerial tram tour. This trip will let you discover the rainforest in two different ways but both from the sky. Enjoy an easy ride on the gondolas along the forest and discover the flora and some fauna of the area. Later prepare to slide through the forest on the ziplines adventure.

A place that you can’t miss during your stay in San Jose or your surroundings is the Poas Volcano. The crater is one of the largest in the world and it is active, so are able to stay there only for a few minutes, because of the gases and your safety. But no worries, we won’t take you there just for that. Later you can take the Coffee Tour and discover the amazing process of the famous drink. As well you can perform a visit to La Paz Waterfall Gardens and enjoy the amazing landscapes, the waterfalls, and the animal shelter.

The central valley (GAM) is full of national parks and adventures to enjoy, culture, and gastronomy to discover as well. You can go from the mountains to the islands and from adrenaline to relax. There are activities to enjoy for everybody.

Our recommendation would be to spend the first night in San Jose or two and either take a city tour or one of our daily expeditions. Also depending on your departure flight, you will have to spend your last day in San Jose. You have the chance as well of flying out from the Liberia Airport in Guanacaste.
